The following are some of the book on Stoicism sitting on my shelf. I’ve included them for interested parties who might not have a keep idea of what is available out there. I’ve noted very brief thoughts on some of them. I may receive a commission if you purchase from these links, so if you’ve enjoyed or benefited from the content of this blog, please purchase through these links to say thank you.
- The Cambridge Companion to the Stoics, ed. Brad Inwood
- An excellent compendium of many authors running the gamut of Stoicism from an academic perspective.
- The Criterion of Truth, by Ralph Doty.
- The Cynic Epistles, Abraham Malherbe.
- Collection of the pseudo-authored Cynic Epistles, bi-lingual in native Koine and English. An interesting perspective of the mother-school to Stoicism, albeit heavily Romanized.
- Discourses and Enchiridion, Epictetus
- The standard texts of practiced Stoicism.
- Emotions and Peace of Mind, Richard Sorabji.
- Epictetus: A Stoic and Socratic Guide to Life, A.A. Long.
- Epictete Et La Sagesse Stoicienne, Jean-Joel Duhot (French, not available in translation)
- Guide to the Good Life, William B. Irvine
- One modern interpretation, Irvine’s Trichotomy is a divergene from orthodox Stoicism.
- Golden Sayings by Epictetus, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
- The book that I found in middle school, and started my interest in the philosophy.
- Hellenistic Philosophy, A.A. Long
- An academic work covering three schools, one of which is Stoicism.
- Hierocles the Stoic: Elements of Ethics, Fragments, and Excerpts.
- The Inner Citadel, Pierre Hadot
- Hadot’s work is the single best modern work available in my opinion.
- Letter from a Stoic, Seneca.
- A selection of Seneca’s Moral Letters.
- Lives of the Eminent Philosophers, Books 1-5, Diogenes Laertius
- Lives of the Eminent Philosophers, Books 6-10 Diogenes Laertius
- Meditations: A New Translation, Gregory Hays
- A modern translation. While I prefer a different translation for my frequent readings, Hays is a refreshing, new taste.
- Musonius Rufus and Education in the Good Life, J.T. Dillon
- A look at Musonius’ pedagogical methods, and the core of his teachings. A useful, incisive look to those Stoics interested in the practical training side of Stoicism.
- Musonius Rufus: Lectures and Sayings, Cynthia King and William Irvine
- The book which most challenged my ideas and conceptions of Stoicism. Lately, I’ve been a serious student of Musonius more than any other classical Stoic.
- A New Stoicism, Lawrence Becker
- Becker’s work is well put together, but there’s lot to disagree with for the more orthodox Stoics. Becker at least acknowledges that his changes are a divergence from Stoic orthodoxy, however.
- The Obstacle is the Way, Ryan Holiday
- Pop Stoicism.
- That One Should Disdain Hardships, trans. Cora Lutz
- A reprinting of Cora Lutz’s translation of Musonius Rufus, English-only.
- Philosophy as a way of Life, Pierre Hadot
- I can’t say enough good things about Hadot. If you want to *practice* Stoicism, you really ought to read his work.
- The Political Theory of the Old and Middle Stoa, Margaret Reesor
- Can be a bit difficult to find.
- Problems in Stoicism, A.A. Long.
- Stoicism and Emotion, Margret Graver.
- An in depth look at Stoic theory regarding the passions, emotions, and more.
- The Stoic Life: Emotions, Duties, and Fate, Tad Brennan.
- The Stoic Sage: The Early Stoics on Wisdom, Sagehood and Socrates, René Brouwer
- A very interesting look into the how and what of the Stoic stage. Specific things of note are the change from inferior persons to Sages.
- Stoic Serenity, Keith Seddon
- Book version of the older correspondence course.
- Stoic Spiritual Exercises, Elen Buzaré
- Based on the work of Hadot, a useful work that has established canonical referecnes and syncretic exercises from other traditions as well.
- Stoicism and the Statehouse, Pat McGeehan.
- A look at using Stoicism attached to Roman Catholicism in the polis.
- Stoic Virtues, Christoph Jedan
- The book I wish I had read six months before I discovered it. Lots of good stuff, here.
- Stoicism and the Art of Happiness, Don Robertson
- Stoicism in Early Christianity
- Stoicism Today, Patrick Usher
- Stoicism, John Sellars
- An excellent survey of Stoicism. This is probably the best ‘first book’ out there. Also, the text book for the College’s SES Course.
- Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot, James Stockdale
- James Stockdale is a no-foolin’ serious guy who’s been there done that. Good read.
- Words of the Ancient Wise: from Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, W.H.D. Rouse
- Very useful for daily readings and reminders.
Thanks for the list!
